1/2 MODEL

STRAIGHT ON

Before the days of the computer and the test tanks, boat hull
designing was very much an art form. A big part of that art
form included the 1/2model. The local boat builder or designer
learned from experience or local knowledge what hull shapes
worked best for the local waters . Sailing conditions are different
everywhere even in the same area. Water conditions, temperature ,
water depth, wind conditions, tides, wave action ,water density,
hull dimensions and a host of others all effect the way a hull
shape works. Trade offs for speed, comfort and handling also
have to be factored into the shape. The hull shape determines
the sailing character and an accurate model of the hull shape
enabled the designer to see the character in three dimension.
By comparing models with their known sailing characters a designer
would make the subtle changes in hull shape he thought would
improve the boats sailing objectives. Accurate model making was
very important. Lifting lines from line drawings to make the model
and making line drawings from the model became important crafts
and techniques. The Half model of the Evangelyn was made from the
¼" =1 ft. line drawing shown on this web site.
