TIME OF ARRIVAL---------6:30 P.M.
WEATHER CONDITIONS----Clear , sunny, no wind Haze and hot

EVENTS-----------------Up early getting the car packed for the girls. Off the dock at
at the last moment for the 8 AM bridge opening after saying a sad good trip to June
and Loura. We went through the Locks into the Elizabeth River and down it past all the
Navy ships into the Chesapeake. The Navy ships along the banks for the river are
spectacular, a hundred sizes and shapes. You would have to go through a dozen times
to see it all. For me it all went past to fast, The day was beautiful for motoring
not a breath of air , the Chesapeake was as flat as a board. Went past Fox Trap Light
house about 2:00, used the autopilot most all the way. Spent most of the time killing
little black flies that bite like mad. The only way to get away from them is to sit
on the bow of the boat. "Night Swimming" was on the radio, they spent 3 days hold up
in Elizibeth City and had a great time, couldn't move due to the weather keeping a
lock closed. They are 30 miles behind us. We ended the day outside Deltaville on
very flat water , anchored with Tom in "Wandering Star" and "THOR II" west of
Stove Point neck. Put the dingy in, picked up Tom and went to visit "THOR II" to
discuss the where, when, and etc. of today and tomorrow.

PORT OF ARRIVAL---------Annapolis
TIME OF ARRIVAL---------8:00 PM
WEATHER CONDITIONS----Started hot clear & no wind ended with thunderstorn Front.

EVENTS-----------------We started at daybrake with a heavy haze over glassey flat
water. It was a different world gliding across water and sky. Around WindMill point
light and up the Chesapeake Bay to Smith Point we went motoring with no wind and
a hot sun. Past Smith Point we picked up a light Northwest breeze that turned into
a Northeast light breeze. Buy the time we reached Cedar Point the breeze had backed
around to a good summer afternoon Southeast wind and with all sails set we were
doing seven knots plus up the bay without the motor. Ten miles out of Annapolis
about 6PM the radio warned of a weather front with severe thunderstorms approaching
from the northwest. We could see the line on the horizon and as we rounded the mark
in the Chesapeake heading for the Seven River. I took down all the sails and secured
the boat and me for heavy weather. We spread ourselves out about 1/2 mile each, I
brought up the rear. "THOR II" was first in line and the first to get hit by the
front,as he disapeared into the black wall he, reported back the wind was extreemely
severe but he was just able to keep his boat straight into it. "Wandering Star's"
Tom said he to was having trouble keeping straight and was just about to turn and
run when a letup helped him out. I gave the boat as much power as I could and was
hit with a 60 Knot gust of wind when the front hit. " Silver Lining" held course
well through the blast . Most of the high wind was over in about 5 min.The blinding
rain and lighting lasted for another twenty min. The Lightning was spectacular
sometimes it hit two bolts at a time. An hour after it started it was over and we
were at anchor watching the sun go down. We anchored out in the harbor close to the
U.S. Naval Academy , there were a number of others there also. Went to bed early for
a midnight secondary front passing. Got a call from a friend ( John ) who would meet
me in the morning around 10 who was coming along for a couple of days.

PORT OF ARRIVAL---------West Side fo Town Point Neck
TIME OF ARRIVAL---------8:00 P.M.
WEATHER CONDITIONS---- Warm, Clear, North Wind 15Knots dropping to 0

EVENTS-----------------In the morning Tom and I called for a local water taxi to take
us ashore. We walked the shops and picked up a few things waiting for John to show up.
Annapolis we found to be a great little resort town. John arrived at 11:00 and we
returned to our boats for a noon departure. Out the Seven River and up the Chesapeake
the wind in our face. The current as we pass under the WILLIAM P. LANE bridge was
3 knots against us, making our passage slow. Once past the the bridge and into the
opening upper bay the current got down to 1-1/2 knots against us, as we turn more
northeast later in the afternoon we had a nice close hauled sail up the bay. We tried
to make it to Chesapeake City on the C & D Cannal but lack of daylight forced us to
find an anckorage short of out goal. We tried to make it up into the Bohemia River
but found it to shallow and after several attempts we settled a deep water pocket
off the east side of the main channel at Town Point Neck. We spent a very calm
night except when the tugs went by.

PORT OF DEPARTURE----Town Point Neck
TIME OF DEPARTURE----6:30 AM
PORT OF ARRIVAL---------Cape May
TIME OF ARRIVAL---------8:00 P.M.
WEATHER CONDITIONS----Clear , Cool , Light wind from SW

EVENTS-----------------Great start with no current and a light wind we reached
Chesapeake City on the C & D Cannal within an hour. We stopped for fuel and had
to wait an hour for them to open. We left heading east with a 2 Knot current and
a nice breeze in our favor, making 9.3 knots over land going down the C&D. When we
turned into the Delaware River we found the current a knot against us and the
SW light wind on our nose. Powering down the Delaware just past the power plant
turning South East we set sails for close hauled motorsailing . Hardly had we
gotten sails set when I lost power due to an engine hoe clamp brake and we had to
set the anchor and make repairs. One half hour later we were under way again. As
we motor sailed down the Delaware several large ships passed us under full steam,
to make sure their wakes would not trouble us we sailed as close to the channel
edge as possible. Working our way down the bay the wind and seas increased. Seas
going to 4 to 6 ft., the wind 10 knots over the front quarter. Passing Brandywine
Shoal we headed for the end of Cape May. "Wandering Star's" mast was to high for
the bridge on Cape May's Canal. We worked our way around the end of Cape May
passing just several hundred few of shore of Cape May light. I worked the GPS and
John the helm ,Tom in "Wandering Star" stayed close. We had a passage of less than
3000 ft. to work through. Progress was slow with a 3 Knot current against us
rounding the Cape and it took some time. We were doing 6 to 7 knots in the water.
Once past the shoal, the tip of the cape and into the Atlantic the going got faster.
We made it in the Cape May Inlet and to anchor in front of the Coast Guard Station
just before dark.

day on the town. Only excitement for the day was getting stopped by the State Water
Police and requested to ware out life jackets on the rough bay waters, we had our sea
strap life perservers on under our rain gear.

PORT OF DEPARTURE----Cape May
TIME OF DEPARTURE----noon
PORT OF ARRIVAL---------Atlantic City
TIME OF ARRIVAL---------6:30 P.M.
WEATHER CONDITIONS----Clear Cool, wind 20 knots or less NW

EVENTS-----------------The morning started out with lots of clouds and high winds
before the front. "Thor II" picked me up in his dinghy and we headed out through
Cape May Inlet as far as we could go the check out the seas condition. The
seas were heavy and the wind still out of Northeast strong so it was decided to
wait till noon and try for Atlantic City. 12:30 The front past, the weather turned
clear cool and with a wind 20 knots and less out of the Northwest. We left Cape
May on a Large rolling seas left over from the storm ,no white caps or braking
water on top just light chop, by mid afternoon the wind has dropped to 10 to 15
knots off our beam and seas getting carmer. In the late afternoon the wind had
backed around to the Southeast still 10 to 15 knots. And still big long rollers
10 to 15 ft high. It was a great day of sailing and got better all afternoon
ending with the seas following. We started the day with reefed sails and ended
under full "Thor II" followed us out of Cape May several hours later wanting
cornor seas to keep the crew happy, we radioed back when the conditions were good.
We anchored at Atlantic City in early evening light, in the inlet before the bridge
next to the casino in calm water with a good current. Tom picked us up in his
dinghy and we went into the basin and tied up to the Trump Marina Casino landing.
John made resevations to get to the airport in the morning then we did a big
supper at the coaino and headed back to the boats for an early start.

TIME OF DEPARTURE----8:00 AM
PORT OF ARRIVAL---------Sandy Hook
TIME OF ARRIVAL---------8:00 P.M. Sunset
WEATHER CONDITIONS----Long Low Rollers, Clear, Cool, Wind SSoutheast 5 to 10 Knots

EVENTS-----------------Up Early 6:00 AM and off for Fuel ,Water, and to drop John
of at the Trump Marina Casino. Made it out of Atlantic City by 7;00 A great day
of sailing. As the day went on the seas and the Southwest wind increased. By the
end of the day Seas were following 6 to 8 ft., wind was from the hind quarter 20
to 25 knots steady, and we were doing 7 to 8 knots. About noon we over took the
tall ship the BLUE MOON under shorten sail doing 3 knots. "Wandering Star" on
one side "Silver Lining" the other. As we reached Sandy Hook the seas became
higher as the out going current became stronger against the wind. The Current
going in the channel to round Sandy Hook was very strong. We went well down
the back side ( West Side) of the hook looking for a place as close to the barrier
island as we could get to get protection from the strong wind. We anchored near
Horseshoe Cove, Tom cooked the fish he caught along the way and invited me over
for supper. Along the way we got a call from "Thor II" they had started several
hours after us and were putting in at Manasquan for the night, after a great day
of sailing. The wind and seas went down by 11:00 PM and it came back up at 4 AM out
of the Southwest. Our Anckorage was somewhat exposed.

PORT OF DEPARTURE----Sandy Hook
TIME OF DEPARTURE----6:30
PORT OF ARRIVAL---------Fort Jefferson
TIME OF ARRIVAL---------7:00 P.M.
WEATHER CONDITIONS----Cool Clear Southwest Wind 10 to 15 knots

EVENTS-----------------An up and down Night, the breeze out of the Southwest made
Sandy Hook Bay quite choppy. Up early set all sails and off for the run up New York
Harbor with the wind on our hind quarter. The out going current against the in
going breeze and ground swells in the Lower Bay made for heavy choppy seas. As we
made it up the bay to the Verrazano Narrows Bridge the seas calmed and the current
got stronger. Motorsailing we went under the bridge with a large ship slowing to
anchor in the upper bay. Just past the bridge the breeze picked up and the sails
helped us make better time. We headed for the Statue of Liberty sailing up the bay
under full sail wind on our beam in a beautiful cool sunny day. We passed the Staton
Island Farries ,Statue of Liberty, Barges, Ellis Island ,Tugs ,ships and all manner
of boats. When we reached the East River we needed another hour for the current to
be in our favor so we sailed up the Hudson River for a while. We returned to the
East River as the tide was turning. Under the Brooklyn Bridge and up the river we
went, by the time we reached Hell Gate we were doing 8 & 9 knots. Under sail we
got lots of waves form people on the shores. The city and bridges went past fast,
in short time we were into Long Island Sound. Into the Sound the wind lighten up
and as we turned East it became a down wind run. A beautiful Friday afternoon lots
of sail boats showed up. We sailed along the northen shore of Long Island turning
into Port Jefferson Harbor for the night. The anchorage was just inside the harbor
inlet to the west behind Old Field Beach a sand spit between the harbor and the
Sound. We worked our way into the little bay as far we could .The anckorage was
very flat and quiet .

PORT OF ARRIVAL---------Long Beach Pt. ,Orient Point
TIME OF ARRIVAL---------4:00 P.M.
WEATHER CONDITIONS----Clear, hot SW wind 15 to 20 Knots Down wind all day 2 to 3ft seas.

EVENTS-----------------Spent quiet night, up early ,set all sails and it was off
down Long Island Sound with a down wind heading for "Wandering Star's" home port
at Mattituck ,Long Island. Being a beautiful Saturday the Sound was full of sail-
boats going in all directions. We arrived at Mattituck at 11:30 AM on an out going
tide. The inlet was narrow , twisty with a strong current, and very pretty. We
stopped at the first marina on the way in. We said our good by's and Tom proceeded
up the the river inlet to Mattituck Harbor to anchor. I picked up fuel, water and
some groceries turned about and headed down the river out the inlet. As I reached
Orient Point Rip the tide started against me. I motorsailed through it with only
the main up and as I rounded Orient Point heading west into the wind to Long
Beach Point I pulled that down. I reached the point at 3:00 PM and decided not to
try for Block Island ,a harbor I have never seen, probably getting in after dark.
Instead I chose an early anckorage behind Long Beach Point a short way west of
Orient Point for and early last day run. 4:00 PM Anchored, called June, made
supper, and went to bed by 6:00 PM. The Exaust from my down wind run gave me a
headacke I didn't notice the cause of untill I head up wind around Orient Point.

DATE----------------------------June 11, 2000
PORT OF DEPARTURE----Long Beach Point
TIME OF DEPARTURE----5:00 AM Day brake
PORT OF ARRIVAL---------Westport Mass.
TIME OF ARRIVAL---------5:00 P.M.
WEATHER CONDITIONS----Warm, Very Hazy , Wind Light SW turning Strong SE in PM

EVENTS-----------------Up and out before daybrake. I set all the sails and
headed across Gardiners Bay at the end of Long Island. Again I had a light
wind behind me and as I motorsail down the middle of Block Island Sound over
a light sea eastward. The motor exaust stayed with me as before giving me a
headacke. Once past Montauk Point I pick up 5 ft. high long following rollers.
As I approched Block Island the wind dropped , the seas became flat except for
for the long rollers, and it became very very hazy. I passed the Northen end
of Block Island at 10:00 PM and never saw the Island through the haze. But
along the way I did see lots of boat traffic in and out of the haze. Early
in the afternoon the Southeast breeze started, the haze lifted, and I had a
nice run across Rhode Island Sound to Westport harbor. At 5:00 PM I picked up
a mooring at Tripps Boat Yard in the harbor just before a heavy thunderstorm on
the leading edge of a cold front hit. June meet me, we unloaded the boat in the
rain and left "Silver Lining" to swing on the mooring for several weeks before
we sailed to Boston's Tall Ship Festival.
